Should You Buy the Apple Watch Ultra 4?

The Ultra 4 is aimed at buyers who need more from a smartwatch than notifications and basic fitness tracking. Its 49mm titanium case, sapphire crystal, and rugged certifications make it better suited to hiking, diving, trail running, and other demanding activities than the standard Apple Watch. The watch is also Apple's largest model, which can be a benefit for readability and battery capacity but may be too bulky for people with smaller wrists. Buyers who do not need satellite connectivity, a siren, a depth gauge, or multi-day battery life should compare the Apple Watch Series 12 before deciding. The Series 12 starts at $399, comes in 42mm and 46mm sizes, and offers many of the same health and fitness features in a smaller and less rugged package.

Because the Ultra 4 was refreshed in September 2026, it sits at the start of its product cycle. That timing makes it a sensible purchase for anyone who wants the newest Ultra model now. A replacement is not expected until 2027 at the earliest, and a major design change may not arrive until 2028 or later. The Ultra 4 also has meaningful upgrades over the Ultra 3, including a faster S11 chip, more RAM, improved heart-rate tracking, and longer battery life. Those changes are most valuable to users who train seriously, travel off-grid, or rely on advanced health data throughout the day.

Design, Display, and Durability

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 keeps the same overall design as the Ultra 3. It has a rounded rectangular shape with slim bezels, a flat sapphire crystal front, and a raised pill-shaped area that houses the Digital Crown and side button. The Digital Crown has larger and deeper grooves than the standard Apple Watch, making it easier to use with gloves. The side button is also designed for gloved use, and the bright international orange Action button on the left side can be customized to launch workouts, mark segments, set Compass Waypoints, and more.

The case measures 49mm by 44mm by 12mm and weighs 63 grams, making it heavier than the 46mm ceramic Apple Watch Series 12. The Ultra 4 uses aerospace-grade titanium, which is lightweight, durable, and corrosion resistant. It is available in Natural Titanium or Black Titanium, both with a satin finish. The black version uses a custom blasting process and a diamond-like carbon coating to improve scratch resistance. Apple also uses 3D printing with aerospace-grade titanium powder to create the case layer by layer, a process that uses less material than traditional forging.

The display is a 1,245 sq mm LTPO3 wide-angle OLED panel with a resolution of 422 by 512 pixels. It can reach up to 3,000 nits of brightness and drop as low as 1 nit for dark environments, and the low brightness enables an always-on second hand. The Ultra 4 has the largest display area of any Apple Watch, beating the 46mm Series 12. It also supports exclusive watch faces including Wayfinder and Modular Ultra. Wayfinder includes a built-in compass, room for up to eight complications, and a night mode that turns red for better visibility in the dark. Modular Ultra uses the outermost edge of the display for real-time data such as seconds, altitude, or depth.

Durability is a major part of the Ultra formula. The watch works in temperatures from -4 degrees Fahrenheit to 131 degrees Fahrenheit and is certified to MIL-STD-810H, a standard used for military equipment and rugged gear. It is water resistant to 100m and certified to WR100 and EN13319, an international standard for diving accessories. Unlike standard Apple Watch models, it can be used for kitesurfing, wakeboarding, and recreational scuba diving to 40 meters. The flat sapphire crystal and raised case edges are designed to protect the display from impacts.

S11 Chip, Audio Intelligence, and Gestures

The S11 chip is Apple's most powerful wearable chip in the Ultra 4. It has a 64-bit dual-core processor, a 4-core Neural Engine, 64GB of storage, and more RAM than the previous generation. Apple says the chip supports new Audio Intelligence features, Siri AI, the Health Sensing System, and more accurate step counts. The S11 also includes a Secure Exclave, a hardware-isolated compartment that processes audio separately from the rest of the system.

Audio Intelligence includes four main features. Sound Recognition alerts users to nearby sounds such as sirens, alarms, doorbells, or a baby crying. Live Rewind can recall what was just said by showing a transcript of the previous 15 seconds after a double press of the Digital Crown. Siri Recap creates high-level summaries of conversations throughout the day, with a title and key points stored in the Siri app. Shazam identifies music playing nearby and shows the song title and artist in the Music Recognition widget in the Smart Stack. These features are opt-in. Apple says Siri Recap does not attribute speakers, does not record full audio, does not create full conversation transcripts, and does not transcribe potentially harmful or sensitive content. Raw audio is inaccessible and deleted after processing. Apple plans to implement Audio Intelligence later this year.

The S11 chip also supports new gestures. A single-handed tap gesture lets users open a widget in the Smart Stack by tapping the index finger and thumb together. Single tap works alongside Double Tap, which can answer calls, end calls, open notifications, play or pause music, start or stop timers, and scroll through the Smart Stack. Double Tap also works in third-party apps. Wrist Flick lets users dismiss incoming notifications and calls with a flick of the wrist.

Health and Fitness Features

The Ultra 4 introduces a new Health Sensing System with a second-generation electrical heart sensor, an always-on optical heart sensor with larger and more power-efficient green LEDs, a blood oxygen sensor, and a temperature sensor. The optical sensor measures heart rate every five seconds throughout the day, improving calorie burn estimates, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, and heart rate irregularity detection. Apple says heart rate variability is measured up to 24 times more often than before. The company also says the Ultra 4 offers the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable.

A new Readiness score analyzes recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep score to produce a 0-10 score with one of four recommendations: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It. The score changes throughout the day as new health data arrives. Apple also redesigned the pedometer model with new machine learning algorithms and says the Ultra 4 provides more accurate distance measurements for indoor walk or run workouts, plus more accurate step counts. Hypertension alerts analyze 30 days of heart rate data for patterns related to possible high blood pressure. The watch cannot measure specific systolic and diastolic pressures, but it can prompt users to seek more information and, if possible, provide seven days of blood pressure cuff testing before contacting a doctor.

The Ultra 4 supports single-lead ECGs through electrodes in the back and the Digital Crown. Users hold a finger on the Digital Crown for about 30 seconds to capture a reading that can detect a normal sinus rhythm, an abnormal result, or an inconclusive result. ECG can detect atrial fibrillation at heart rates between 50 and either 120 or 150 beats per minute, depending on country or region. Sleep tracking monitors time awake, REM, Core, and Deep sleep stages, and the Sleep Score metric rates sleep quality based on duration, bedtime consistency, waking frequency, and time spent in each stage. Sleep apnea detection uses the accelerometer to sense small wrist movements associated with interruptions in normal breathing patterns and analyzes 30 days of sleep data.

Crash Detection uses motion sensors and a sensor-fusion algorithm to detect a severe car crash. After a crash, the watch checks in with the user and automatically dials emergency services if there is no response after a 10-second countdown. Temperature sensors measure wrist temperature and ambient air temperature to reduce outside bias. The wrist sensor takes readings every five seconds while the wearer sleeps and supports retrospective ovulation estimates and improved period predictions. Blood oxygen monitoring uses green, red, and infrared LEDs with photodiodes to estimate oxygen saturation between 70 and 100 percent. In the United States, blood oxygen data can only be viewed on the iPhone because of an ongoing lawsuit; in other countries, the data is available on the watch.

Outdoor Activity Tools

The Ultra 4 includes the same activity features that make the Ultra line stand out. The Depth app uses the depth gauge to show current depth, water temperature, time spent underwater, and maximum depth reached. Apple has partnered with Huish Outdoors for the Oceanic+ app, which turns the watch into a dive computer with dive planning, dive metrics, visual and haptic alerts, a no-decompression limit, ascent rate, and safety stop guidance. The app runs on the Buhlmann decompression algorithm. A dedicated Tides app provides high and low tide information, rising and falling tides, tide height and direction, and sunrise and sunset times.

The Compass app includes an analog compass with a digital view of bearing and direction. Scrolling the Digital Crown reveals bearing, elevation, incline, latitude, and longitude. Users can drop Compass Waypoints with the Action button or the Compass Waypoint option, and waypoints update in real time relative to the watch's position. Backtrack uses GPS to record a path of where the user has been, helping them retrace their steps if they get lost or disoriented. The Ultra 4 also has dual-frequency GPS with L1 and L5 frequencies and new positioning algorithms. Apple says it provides the most accurate GPS of any Apple Watch for distance, pace, and route data. The L5 frequency works better in urban environments with trees and other obstacles. Apple Maps uses the GPS function for more accurate road, bike, and trail routes.

Battery Life, Connectivity, and Safety

Battery life is one of the Ultra 4's biggest improvements. It lasts up to 50 hours on a single charge, compared with 42 hours for the Ultra 3, an 8-hour gain. With Low Power Mode and an additional battery-saving option that reduces heart rate measurements during workouts, the watch can last up to 84 hours for multi-day adventures. It offers up to 18 hours with outdoor workout tracking, up to 25 hours in Extended Workout mode with full GPS and heart rate readings, and up to 45 hours in Max Extended Workout mode with GPS readings every second. Fast charging can reach 80 percent in about 45 minutes, and 15 minutes of charging provides up to 18 hours of use with the included charging puck.

All Apple Watch Ultra models include cellular connectivity, though a carrier plan is required to use it. The Ultra 4 supports 5G and can connect to cellular networks without an iPhone for internet access, although the cellular plan itself is linked to an iPhone plan. Satellite connectivity is exclusive to the Ultra line. It supports Emergency SOS via satellite, satellite-based text messaging, and satellite Find My updates. Emergency SOS works without a cellular plan, while messages and location sharing require an active cellular plan. Satellite connectivity is currently free. Find My via satellite can send a location once every 15 minutes to selected contacts, and Messages via satellite supports texts, emoji, and tapback reactions with contacts from the last 30 days.

The Ultra 4 has a W3 Apple wireless chip, a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, and Bluetooth 5.3. The UWB chip enables Precision Finding for a misplaced iPhone with visual, haptic, and audio guidance. It also supports Car Keys, AirTag tracking, and HomePod media handoff. The 86-decibel emergency siren can be heard up to 600 feet or 180 meters away and uses two alternating patterns, including a distress pattern and the SOS pattern. It can be activated by pressing and holding the Action button or the side button. There are three built-in microphones with adaptive beamforming and wind noise reduction, plus dual speakers for calls and Siri. The watch also includes a depth gauge and seal check service through Apple for owners who want to confirm diving readiness.

How It Compares With the Apple Watch Series 12 and SE 3

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 is sold alongside the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch SE 3. The Series 12 starts at $399 and is available in aluminum, ceramic, or titanium in 42mm and 46mm sizes. Compared with the Ultra 4, it lacks satellite connectivity and a siren, has shorter battery life, and uses a smaller, less rugged case. The Series 12 still offers many of the same health and fitness features, making it a better fit for people who want a lighter watch or do not need extreme outdoor tools. The Apple Watch SE 3 starts at $249 and is Apple's low-cost model. It has an older design and lacks some health sensors, including the blood oxygen sensor and the ECG app.

What's Next for the Apple Watch Ultra

The Apple Watch Ultra is not expected to receive a major design update until 2028 at the earliest. Apple is working on noninvasive blood glucose monitoring for a future Apple Watch, but the feature is still several years away. The company is also considering LG Display's high-mobility oxide thin-film transistor technology for a future Apple Watch OLED display in 2027. Compared with current LTPO technology, high-mobility oxide can increase electron mobility for lower power consumption. A future Apple Watch could also include Touch ID, although it is unclear whether the sensor would go under the display or be integrated into the side button. Touch ID could reduce reliance on numerical passcodes, even though the Apple Watch already uses wrist authentication for purchases.
