The 12 best Windows laptops to buy amid RAMageddon

Oct 14, 2026  Twila Rosenbaum 22 views

Why Windows laptop prices have soared

The ongoing memory crisis, widely nicknamed "RAMageddon," is the single biggest reason Windows laptop prices have skyrocketed over the past year. New AI data centers are hoarding memory components, tightening global supply of DRAM and driving up costs across the entire PC supply chain. Compounding the problem, Microsoft reportedly raised its Windows 11 licensing fees at abnormally high rates. PC makers are therefore spending more on both hardware and software, and consumers are absorbing the difference.

Several top picks have already weathered price hikes, including the Asus Zenbook A16, the Dell XPS 14, XPS 13 and 14S, and the Framework Laptop 13. All of them remain worth recommending at their higher prices, but each is being watched closely — any further climb toward exorbitant levels would knock them off this list in favor of better-value alternatives.

How these laptops were selected

More than 70 Windows laptops have been tested over the past two years, spanning the latest releases from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo. Each machine is evaluated on four criteria: performance, battery life, design and build quality, and overall value. Testing combines synthetic benchmarking with real-world use, including a battery rundown that loops a 1080p open-source film at 50 percent brightness and 50 percent volume. The target for a standard Windows laptop is at least 16.5 hours; gaming laptops are judged against a five-hour bar.

The 12 best Windows laptops to buy right now

1. Asus Zenbook A14 (UX3407NA) — Best Windows laptop for most people

Price: $1,349.99

The 2026 Asus Zenbook A14 is the best general-purpose Windows laptop for most people who need an attractive, lightweight, fast, long-lasting and affordable everyday driver. It is also the strongest MacBook Air alternative on the market.

A new Snapdragon X2 Elite CPU adds serious pep. The Zenbook A14 can now keep pace with modern MacBooks in both single-core and demanding multi-core scenarios, a feat only two other Windows laptops can claim. It is actually slightly faster than an M5 MacBook Air in multi-core tasks like light video editing, beating 91 percent of every laptop in the test database on that metric, including far pricier gaming and creator machines. An 80-TOPs neural processing unit doubles Microsoft's requirement for Copilot+ PCs.

Battery life is exceptional: 27 hours and 36 minutes in the rundown test, the fourth-longest of all time. The chassis is built from "Ceraluminum," a durable, scratch-resistant, pottery-like material that keeps the base configuration at just 2.4 pounds without feeling fragile. A creamy keyboard, silky touchpad and bright OLED display round out the package.

  • Geekbench 6 single-core: 3,628
  • Geekbench 6 multi-core: 19,144
  • Battery life: 27 hours 36 minutes
  • CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite; GPU: Qualcomm Adreno
  • 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD; 14-inch 1,920 x 1,200 OLED, 60Hz, 500 nits
  • Ports: HDMI, two USB-C, USB-A, headphone jack; 2.4 pounds

2. Dell XPS 13 (DX13260) — Best budget Windows laptop

Price: $699.99

The 2026 Dell XPS 13 is the best Windows laptop for shoppers with strict budgets but luxury tastes. Workloads should stay basic: web browsing, streaming and document editing. K-12 students count as part of that crew, and high school students aged 16 and up can save $100 through Nov. 2.

The all-aluminum chassis, backlit keyboard, glass touchpad and sharp, bright, smooth touchscreen make it look far more expensive than its price tag suggests. Its 2.5K anti-glare touch display is the kind of component that is shocking to see on a laptop this cheap, and it looks better than screens on machines that cost far more. At 2.2 pounds and under a foot across, it is easy to carry to class.

The Intel Core 5 320 chip is fine for entry-level work. Do not push it with heavy multitasking, since the base model only carries 8GB of RAM, but the processor, memory and storage are all upgradable. Battery life came in at 18 hours and 56 minutes, the longest ever recorded for a budget laptop and more than four hours longer than its Apple counterpart.

  • Geekbench 7 single-core: 2,256
  • Geekbench 7 multi-core: 7,316
  • Battery life: 18 hours 56 minutes
  • CPU: Intel Core 5 320; GPU: Intel Graphics
  • 8GB RAM / 256GB SSD; 13.5-inch 2,560 x 1,600 touchscreen, 30–120Hz
  • Ports: Two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C only; 2.2 pounds

3. Acer Swift Edge 14 AI (SFE14-51T-75PZ) — Best Windows laptop for college

Price: $1,499.99

College students who need or prefer Windows will appreciate this laptop's decadent screen and featherlight build. The Swift Edge 14 AI comes in at just 0.37 inches thick at its thinnest point and 2.18 pounds, making it the sleekest traditional laptop ever tested. It is thinner and lighter than the 13-inch MacBook Air, yet Acer still worked in an HDMI port, two USB-A ports and two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports.

A pearly white finish with gold accents gives it a modern-minimalist look, and it resists fingerprints well. The chassis feels sturdier than its svelteness suggests, and the keyboard uses a first-of-its-kind soft-touch UV-cured coating that feels velvet-like under the fingers.

The Swift Edge is not as fast or long-lasting as the Zenbook A14, but it offers twice the RAM, more storage and a 120Hz 2.8K OLED touchscreen for only $150 more. It runs on an x86-based Intel chip, so there are no ARM compatibility worries for coursework. Battery life of nearly 21 hours means an all-nighter will not require a charger.

  • Geekbench 6 single-core: 2,717; multi-core: 10,802
  • Battery life: 20 hours 44 minutes
  • CPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 258V; GPU: Intel Arc 140V
  • 32GB RAM / 1TB SSD; 14-inch 2,880 x 1,800 OLED touch, 120Hz, 400 nits
  • Ports: Two Thunderbolt 4, two USB-A, HDMI, Kensington lock, headphone jack; 2.18 pounds

4. HP OmniBook 3 16-bz000 — Best Windows laptop for battery life

Price: $1,149.99

The reigning battery champion, the HP OmniBook 3 16 ran for over 40 hours before dying in testing. Only two other Windows laptops have ever surpassed the 30-hour mark, and current MacBooks cap out around 21 hours. Snapdragon X-powered laptops are known for stamina, but this one is absurd.

Design-wise it is a basic silver machine with a plastic keyboard deck, but the 16-inch IPS display is huge and punchy enough that it can be mistaken for OLED. The island-style keyboard strikes a near-perfect balance between snappy and cushy, and backlighting is included at no extra cost. It is relatively thin for its size, though its weight is average.

The tested configuration cost $1,629.99, steep for a partially plastic laptop with an entry-level CPU, but it packed 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. Buyers can safely drop to 16GB/512GB or even 8GB/256GB, since the line starts at $999.99. It is worth waiting for a sale.

  • Geekbench 6 single-core: 2,126; multi-core: 10,362
  • Battery life: 40 hours 14 minutes
  • CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon X; GPU: Qualcomm Adreno
  • 32GB RAM / 1TB SSD; 16-inch 1,920 x 1,200, 60Hz, 300 nits
  • Ports: Two USB-C, two USB-A, HDMI, headphone jack; 3.65 pounds

5. Asus ProArt PZ14 (HT7407) — Best Windows laptop for creators

Price: $1,899.99

For mobile creators who cannot decide between a laptop and a tablet, the Asus ProArt PZ14 is the best detachable Windows machine tested recently. The form factor suits dynamic workloads: typing a script one minute, sketching logo ideas the next.

Powered by the Snapdragon X2 Elite chip, it is not quite as fast as traditional PCs with the same processor, but it still zips past every Intel- and AMD-powered machine tested this year in single-core work and rivals premium creator laptops in multi-core scenarios. It runs cool and quiet even with 35 tabs and three apps open.

The tablet portion carries a 2.8K OLED touchscreen with a 144Hz refresh rate, ideal for video editing or gaming. It also has an 8MP front camera and a 13MP rear camera, both solid for laptop shooters. Without the keyboard it weighs just 1.74 pounds and measures 0.35 inches thin, making it the lightest and slimmest device on this list. The detachable keyboard has sufficient travel, a pleasant clack and a velvety surface. A bundled case with built-in kickstand supports landscape or portrait orientation.

  • Geekbench 7 single-core: 3,250; multi-core: 16,978
  • Battery life: 17 hours 39 minutes
  • CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite; GPU: Qualcomm Adreno
  • 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD; 14-inch 2,880 x 1,800 OLED touch, 144Hz
  • Ports: Two USB-C, SD card reader; 1.74 pounds without keyboard, 2.74 with

6. Asus ExpertBook Ultra (B9406) — Best Windows laptop for work

Price: $3,599.99

The ExpertBook Ultra is a mind-boggling machine: impossibly thin, with the best display ever seen on a laptop, over two shifts of battery life and as much brawn as an entry-level gaming laptop. Its only real flaws are a muddy webcam and a sky-high price.

The magnesium-aluminum chassis wears a matte Nano Ceramic coating that resists scratches and fingerprints. It weighs 2.4 pounds and measures 0.43 inches at its thinnest, yet it is solidly built and packed with ports, including double-sided Thunderbolt 4/USB-C for convenient charging. A velvety haptic touchpad and a UV-coated keyboard that resists greasy keys complete the package.

The 2.8K OLED touchscreen has a peak brightness of 1,400 nits for HDR, a variable 30–120Hz refresh rate and a matte finish that kills glare. The Intel Core Ultra X7 385H is a standout in multi-core scenarios, and the Intel Arc B390 integrated GPU performs like a lower-end discrete card, running demanding games at 1080p well above 100fps with AI upscaling enabled.

  • Geekbench 6 single-core: 2,819; multi-core: 16,321
  • Battery life: 18 hours 26 minutes
  • CPU: Intel Core Ultra X7 385H; GPU: Intel Arc B390
  • 32GB RAM / 1TB SSD; 14-inch 2,880 x 1,800 OLED touch, 30–120Hz
  • Ports: Two Thunderbolt 4, two USB-A, HDMI, headphone jack; 2.4 pounds

7. Dell 14S (DS14260) — Best mid-range pick for battery life and build quality

Price: $1,599.99

The Dell 14S suits users who care far more about battery life and build quality than raw performance and portability. It is a solid backup to the Acer Swift Edge 14 AI if it is cheaper or more available, and another smart buy for college students.

Its Intel Core Ultra 7 355 chip outperformed the base configuration of the premium XPS 14, lasted much longer and felt just as nice for a fraction of the price. It is not especially zippy, but it handles regular computer work fine. Battery life of 34 hours and 29 minutes makes it the second-longest-lasting laptop ever tested.

The 14S feels as sturdy as the XPS 14 and has more ports. Its island-style keyboard is preferable to the XPS model's lattice design, and its speakers and microphone were above average. The optional 1200p OLED touchscreen is a little dim and glary but lovely overall; saving $50 by choosing an anti-glare finish is probably smart.

  • Geekbench 6 single-core: 2,657; multi-core: 11,266
  • Battery life: 34 hours 29 minutes
  • CPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 355; GPU: Intel Graphics
  • 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD; 14-inch 1,920 x 1,200, 60Hz, 300 nits
  • Ports: Two Thunderbolt/USB-C, two USB-A, HDMI, headphone jack; 3.4 pounds

8. HP OmniBook Ultra 14-kg000 — Best for style and speed

Price: $2,249.99

The OmniBook Ultra 14 is the Windows laptop to choose for something as fast as the top pick but more eye-catching. HP slimmed and sleekened the design for 2026, adding shiny squared edges that flare subtly at the back. It measures 0.42 inches thin but looks skinnier thanks to a tapering base. A stone blue finish with an anti-smudge coating gives it a quiet-luxury vibe.

The 2.8K 120Hz OLED touchscreen is detailed, rich, bright and silky-smooth. It pairs with a haptic touchpad and a lattice-style keyboard that feels slightly mushy but is very quiet, ideal for a coffee shop. The Snapdragon X2 Elite configuration performs just as well as the Zenbook A14, making it another strong MacBook Air competitor, with battery life of 20 hours and five minutes.

  • Geekbench 6 single-core: 3,784; multi-core: 19,579
  • Battery life: 20 hours 5 minutes
  • CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite; GPU: Qualcomm Adreno
  • 32GB RAM / 1TB SSD; 14-inch 2,880 x 1,800 OLED touch, 120Hz
  • Ports: Three Thunderbolt 4/USB-C, headphone jack; 2.81 pounds

9. Dell XPS 14 (DA14260) — Best MacBook Pro alternative

Price: $2,999.99

In one of the best tech comeback stories of recent memory, Dell revived and refined the minimalist XPS 14 for 2026. It is thinner, freed of past design burdens like the capacitive touch function row, and more pleasant to use. Build quality is better than ever, and a 2.8K OLED touchscreen is now optional but highly recommended.

Two variants were tested: a base model with an Intel Core Ultra 5 325 and a 2K IPS display at $2,000, and an upgraded model with an Intel Core Ultra X7 358H and the OLED touchscreen at $2,900. The upgraded version justifies its premium far better; shoppers leaning toward the base model should look at the Dell 14S instead.

The Core Ultra X7 358H is not quite as fast as Apple's M5 in single-core tasks, but it is among the snappiest x86 chips for basic work and shines in multi-core workloads, vying with the latest MacBook Pro and some gaming laptops. The Intel Arc B390 iGPU behaves like an entry-level discrete GPU, so AAA gaming is possible. Battery life of about 10 hours in the video rundown test is below the 16.5-hour category median, though the display can drop from 120Hz to 20Hz for static content to extend runtime.

  • Geekbench 6 single-core: 2,865; multi-core: 16,746
  • Battery life: 10 hours 19 minutes
  • CPU: Intel Core Ultra X7 358H; GPU: Intel Arc B390
  • 32GB RAM / 1TB SSD; 14-inch 2,880 x 1,800 OLED touch, 20–120Hz
  • Ports: Three Thunderbolt 4/USB-C, headphone jack; 3 pounds

10. Acer Swift X 14 (SFX14-73G-91QV) — Best Windows laptop for photo and video editing

Price: $1,699.99

Most professional creatives need a dedicated graphics card. The Acer Swift X 14 with a top-end Intel Core Ultra 9 285H and RTX 5070 graphics is super powerful, fairly priced, equipped with a glorious OLED screen and long-lasting, relatively speaking. Gaming laptops can match its power, but most are nowhere near as compact.

This 14-inch desktop replacement matches an M5 MacBook Pro in multi-core scenarios, which covers most creative tasks. The RTX 5070 ran graphically taxing games at over 100fps at 1080p without AI upscaling, making it well suited to demanding editing and animation software. It is not a Copilot+ PC, so there is no high-power NPU for on-device AI work, which matters for machine learning engineers but not for most editors.

Creator-forward ports include a microSD card slot, and the 120Hz OLED touchscreen is crisp and vivid. The included stylus cannot draw on the screen, but the haptic trackpad doubles as a drawing pad. If stock runs out, the Acer Swift X 14 AI swaps in an AMD Ryzen AI 7 350 and RTX 5060 for $300 less.

  • Geekbench 6 single-core: 2,871; multi-core: 17,027
  • Battery life: 10 hours 10 minutes
  • CPU: Intel Core Ultra 9 285H; GPU: Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070
  • 32GB RAM / 1TB SSD; 14-inch 2,880 x 1,800 OLED touch, 120Hz, 340 nits
  • Ports: Two USB-C, HDMI, two USB-A, microSD, Kensington lock, headphone jack; 3.48 pounds

11. Asus Zenbook A16 (UX3607OA-ZB) — Best 16-inch Windows laptop

Price: $1,999.99

The top pick's bigger brother has an upgraded display and even more power. It is the first laptop on the market with the top-end Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme chip, and it cruises. It keeps up with M5 MacBooks in single-core tasks and handily beats them in multi-core ones, ranking as the second-fastest laptop ever tested.

The Zenbook A16 carries a whopping 48GB of memory, which makes it especially capable for running large language models on-device. It got a $300 price bump over the summer, but remains reasonable for a turbocharged machine with ample memory. Battery life of 16 hours and 26 minutes is strong for a laptop this large and fast.

Large does not mean bulky: at 2.87 pounds it is the lightest 16-incher ever tried. The Ceraluminum design mirrors the smaller model, but adds touch, a 120Hz refresh rate, a sharper 2.8K resolution and a peak brightness of 1,100 nits for HDR. An SD card slot is included.

  • Geekbench 6 single-core: 3,663; multi-core: 22,210
  • Battery life: 16 hours 26 minutes
  • CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme; GPU: Qualcomm Adreno
  • 48GB RAM / 1TB SSD; 16-inch 2,880 x 1,800 OLED touch, 120Hz
  • Ports: Two USB-C, HDMI, USB-A, SD card slot, headphone jack; 2.87 pounds

12. Framework Laptop 13 (AMD) — Best repairable Windows laptop

Price: $899.00

DIYers, tinkerers and anyone tired of buying a new laptop every few years will love the modular, repairable Framework Laptop 13. It costs more than rivals with similar specs, but it is infinitely upgradable and repairable, the closest thing to a buy-it-for-life laptop and a gateway into the right-to-repair movement.

The motherboard, memory, storage, keyboard and display can all be swapped at home with minimal skill. Assembly is a simpler process than putting together a flat-pack shoe cabinet; everything snaps or screws into place cleanly. Swappable expansion cards mean no dongles.

An AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series version with an upgraded thermal system, WiFi 7 and an updated keyboard ran much cooler than the Intel counterpart and offered drastically better single-core performance. The optional 2.8K 120Hz matte display is visibly crisper and smoother than the standard 2.2K 60Hz panel.

  • Geekbench 6 single-core: 2,700; multi-core: 10,304
  • Battery life: 12 hours 43 minutes
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen AI 5 340; GPU: AMD Radeon 840M
  • 16GB RAM / 500GB SSD; 13.5-inch 2,880 x 1,920, 120Hz, 500 nits
  • Ports: Four customizable expansion cards plus headphone jack; 2.87 pounds

A note about ARM-based Windows laptops

Qualcomm's Snapdragon X series chips use ARM-based architecture rather than the x86 architecture used by Intel and AMD. Compatibility therefore differs. ARM laptops do not work natively with certain specialty software such as AutoCAD, nor can they run as many PC games. These issues are a non-concern for most general-purpose Windows users, but they are dealbreakers for PC gamers and some other groups.

College students should also steer clear of ARM laptops. When the hardware recommendations of the 10 top public universities were examined for the 2026 fall semester, a couple of schools explicitly advised students against ARM-based machines to ensure coursework could run without emulation. That is a major reason the Acer Swift Edge 14 AI and Dell 14S are recommended for students: both use x86-based Intel chips. ARM compatibility has improved over the past couple of years and will keep improving now that Nvidia is launching its own RTX Spark superchips built on ARM.

What is coming next

Microsoft announced a second-generation Surface Laptop 13-inch with the Snapdragon X2 Plus chip and a brighter display, a slightly cheaper and more portable version of its flagship Surface Laptop 8. Now available for preorder, the Surface Laptop 13-inch starts at $1,199.99 with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS storage, and it launches alongside the Surface Pro 12-inch second edition, a detachable tablet starting at $1,149.99 with the same specs.

Several other PC makers announced new laptops at IFA in Berlin, with models confirmed for an eventual U.S. release including a budget Lenovo IdeaPad Vibe in two sizes and seven colors, the Lenovo Yoga Pro 5n and Yoga 9n 2-in-1 creator laptops powered by Nvidia's RTX Spark platform, the Lenovo ThinkBook 14 Gen 9 and ThinkBook 14x Gen 2 business laptops, a slim Acer Swift Air 16, and a new version of the Dell 14S with more colors, less powerful processors and a cheaper price.

Two existing picks, the Acer Swift Edge 14 AI and the Intel-powered Acer Swift X 14, were out of stock at the time of writing but are being monitored. If they are fully discontinued, the Dell 14S would become the top choice for college students, and the AMD-powered Acer Swift X 14 AI would take over the photo and video editing slot.
