Young backfield powers Sheridan in playoff revenge
THORNVILLE — Sheridan’s playoff opener became a breakout performance for a pair of underclassmen in the backfield. Sophomore S.J. Shriner and freshman Emmitt Gilder combined for more than 280 rushing yards Friday night, and the sixth-seeded Generals rode that production and a veteran offensive line to a 38-35 victory over No. 11 Tri-Valley in a Division III, Region 11 first-round game at Paul Culver Jr. Stadium.
The win avenged a 38-21 regular-season loss to the Scotties and ended a five-game losing streak in the series. Sheridan also remained unbeaten at home in playoff games. The Generals advanced to face third-seeded Columbus East (9-1) in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Nov. 6. The winner of that matchup will play either No. 2 seed Licking Valley or No. 7 Granville in the semifinals.
